Kyle Pommer, a member of the St. Johns High School Class of 2006, recently graduated from Johnson and Wales University, Denver Campus with an associate's degree in baking and pastry arts. Additionally, Pommer is a certified "pastry culinarian" by the American Culinary Federation. He is the son of Jerry and Christine Pommer of Concho. Pommer finished the program three months early, making the "Dean's List" for the past four terms, and graduated cum laude with a cumulative 3.56 GPA. While in the program he completed an 11-week internship with Compass Group. During his time at Johnson and Wales, he was introduced to the techniques of making wedding cakes, tortes, classical French pastries, artisan breads, plated deserts and showpieces. Throughout the program, Pommer developed professionalism and proficiency in cost control, sanitation and even food marketing. |

Grand Canyon University volleyball player Aubrie Lussier of St. Johns received the prestigious Roland Beck Senior Scholar-Athlete Award at the school's athletic banquet (2008).
Award recipients must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have attended GCU for at least two years, while demonstrating athletic excellence as a starter or regular reserve, leadership ability on campus and active church or Christian principles upon which the university was founded. |

Janell Richardson of St. Johns will compete in four events at the NJCAA National Track and Field Championships this weekend in Levelland, Texas. Richardson, a freshman on the Scottsdale Community College Track and Field team, has qualified in the high-jump, pole vault, and javelin, and she will be running a leg on the 4X400 relay team at the national meet. Her best times this year are five-foot-three in the high jump, 10-6 in the pole vault and 115-11 in the javelin. "That's pretty big for us," said Scottsdale CC assistant track and field coach Mike Chapman. It's the first time we've had any woman in the last 20 years compete in four events at a national championship meet." |
