Special Service Department
The Special Services Department supports individuals with disabilities. Our goal is to help your child have a positive educational experience, while providing a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. If you have any questions about your child’s services, or if you feel your child should be receiving services, please give us a call.
The Individualized Education Program (IEP)
The special education team works with families to create an Individualized Educational Plan (IEPs) for students that qualify for special education. This plan is the foundation of special education. The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written program that addresses the special education services the student will receive. A continuum of services is available based on the needs of the student. Parental participation and collaboration are an important component to the IEP.
In order to qualify for special education, a student must be diagnosed by a multidisciplinary evaluation team. The evaluation team must also determine that the child is in need of special education.
Pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1351, we will destroy special education records including intervention, evaluation, and IEPs four years after the student’s final enrollment in the district.
Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA ‘04) that requires a school district to locate, identify, and evaluate all individuals with disabilities within our geographical boundaries, that are between the ages of birth through age 21. Individuals identified with a disability will be provided early intervention or special education services. Child Find applies to children who are:
- Suspected of having a disability, even though they are advancing from grade to grade
- Highly mobile, such as migrant and homeless
- Wards of the state
- Private school students
- Homeschool students
Child Find occurs the second Monday of every month from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Coronado Elementary School. To make an appointment, please call Robin Gore at (928) 337-2279 ext. 1206.
