3rd grade

Author: Courtney Bond, Coronado Elementary Principal

On July 1st at the St. Johns Unified School District's Board Meeting, 18 third grade students and their phenomenal third grade teachers, Rachel Winters, Beverly Harris, and Sandra Nielsen, were recognized for their outstanding performance on the Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) given in April. These students did a phenomenal job!

The state average for 3rd grade student proficiency in the area of ELA was 36%. For Coronado students, it was 63%, the highest proficiency rate for the Coronado Elementary in the last 10 years. The state average for Math was 41%. For this 3rd grade class of 2025, they achieved 72%, performing well above state average in both areas!

Third grade is the first year these students took the Arizona state standardized tests. The purpose of the AASA is to measure how well students have grasped the content taught in the ares of ELA and Math in grades 3-8. This statewide achievement test provides valuable data for schools, families, and teachers, determining the effectiveness of teacher instruction, student learning, and identifying where students may need additional support.

It will be exciting to see how these students continue to grow academically in the following years as they transition up to the St. Johns Middle School. The support of their families and the hard work of not only their 3rd grade teachers, but also their previous teachers leading up to 3rd grade have contributed to the success and growth of all of the Coronado 3rd grade students.
