Attendance

The months of June and July are a great time to schedule some of those annual doctor appointments, take a fun family trip, or just have a nice lazy day with nothing scheduled and no plans! Please take advantage of these two months with no school so that school attendance can be a top priority for the 2025-2026 school year! Planning ahead is key to ensuring consistent school attendance for your child. We love having your students at school and would like to work together (School staff and Parents/Guardians) to ensure your child gets the best education we can offer.

Below is SJUSD’s procedures and protocols for addressing truancy.

  1. District sends out a letter to parents at the beginning of the year to detail policy and procedures regarding truancy.

  2. Every time a student is absent, the school notifies parents.

  3. When a student receives their 10th  absence, the school sends a letter home. The school saves the letter in the student’s file.

  4. When a student receives their 15th  absence, the school makes a home visit as appropriate. Home visits should be done in pairs, and the SRO can be utilized for this purpose.

For students with an IEP, at the 12th absence, a new IEP meeting is convened to discuss absences as part of the IEP.

  5. When a student receives their 18th absence, a meeting with the parents is convened and the school works with the SSO or SJPD to file truancy.
