This post is just to provide information for those interested regarding the fire alarm going off this morning at Coronado.
The fire alarm went off first thing this morning. Following emergency protocol, the building was evacuated immediately. Because of the freezing temperatures, buses were brought in to keep students warm.
It looks like maybe a burner in one of our heating units malfunctioned due to the freezing temperatures, leading to some smoking/smoke smell. The fire department did a great job identifying the issue and helping us resolve it. Our maintenance team will be working on this unit to fix it. Fortunately, it is a unit that serves a classroom that is not used during the day.
When students came back to the school, students who normally eat breakfast were given time to get breakfast. We are really grateful for our great fire department, as well as the food service and transportation departments for making things work this morning. Also, a huge thank you to teachers and staff who sat with kids on the bus and who made the best of a disruption to the normal school day.

The fire department has resolved the issue and students are clear to go to class.

Update: the fire department is still working on the issue at the Coronado school. Students are on the buses to keep warm. We're hoping for resolution soon so kids can get back in the building.

We love celebrating things at Coronado! Valentine's is one of those days too, however it occurs on a regular school day this year, so please keep in mind that instruction comes first. We will leave room to celebrate at the end of the day. Any Valentines Day Gifts brought to the office, will not be delivered to classrooms until the end of the day to help maximize instruction and avoid disruption. Thank you Coronado families for all you do!

We love Mrs. Kay Hauser and this great tradition she provides for our 3rd graders! This week she is teaching them proper measurement skills and baking basics as students make cinnamon rolls!

February 16th will be our Site Council Meeting at 3:30pm. Any and all are welcome to attend. We will be discussing school improvement and I would love feedback from the community. If you have anything specific you would like to add to the agenda, please email me at cobond@sjusd.net.

It's that time of year, when we start planning for next year. I would appreciate your feedback.
Parents who will have upcoming Kindergarteners, please take a moment and answer a few short questions for me!

One of my favorite things I get to do in the job is watch teachers do their thing. Third grade is working on comparing and contrasting this week as well as multiplication, rounding, and measurement. Second grade is learning about bugs, and man do they love it. When your second and third graders come home today, see if they can tell you what they learned!

The Arizona Diamondbacks are sponsoring their annual ATTENDANCE MATTERS campaign. Students with perfect attendance for the month of February (for us beginning Feb. 3rd) will be awarded a complimentary ticket to a D-Backs home game with the opportunity to choose from a variety of games from April through July.

Did you know you can check out our school lunch menu on the SJUSD app? Just open the SJUSD app, click on schools, select Coronado, click on menu and and select Dining. It's that simple. If you don't have the SJUSD app, it is available for both androids and apple. Just search SJUSD.

Shoutout to Breonna Ellington, one of our amazing 1st grade teachers. Breonna just completed her master's degree, with an emphasis in reading education. This is a huge accomplishment as it represents hours and hours of schooling that Breonna did after work, while also raising a family. Her students will be the benefactors of her hard work for years to come. We feel very fortunate to have Breonna as one of our teachers!

Looks like Mrs. Raban's class is getting ready for the 100th day of school! Our 100th day is Wednesday January 25, 2023!!!

Due to icy conditions, the Hunt/Concho bus route will be on a two hour delay in the morning. All other bus routes will be on regular schedule.

It's chilly out there! Reminder of our Cold Weather Policy, as found in your parent handbook:
Cold Weather
We will only have inside recess during the school day, if the temperature is below 20 degrees F, or if there is heavy snow or rain fall. We do take into account the wind chill when determining the temperature. We have used this guideline in the district for quite some time. If your child does not have a coat there are many coats in the lost and found they can use. Of course kids with health issues can be exempt. Our policy is much like many other schools in the White Mountain areas. Children benefit from vigorous exercise and need to be given the opportunity to play outside whenever possible. Also please remember that the doors of the school are not opened until 7:45 am.
Please send your kids with warm jackets and write their names on the tags. Our lost and found is getting quite full!

EXCITING NEWS!
Over the past year, the school district pursued a grant (the Final Mile Project) that would bring a high-speed internet provider to St. Johns. Our hope in pursuing this grant was to provide an option for high-speed internet for our students in their homes while also giving community members this much-needed option as well.
In short, after a long process, we were awarded the grant and Triad Wireless (based in Phoenix) has installed towers at each of our schools and is now offering high-speed internet plans to community members. Attached is Triad Wireless' flyer that includes their contact number for any community members who are interested.
A "line of sight" from your house to one of Triad's towers at one of our schools will be needed. If you call Triad Wireless, they can provide more details. Please note that the schools and the district have no control over Triad Wireless or their services. Once you sign up with Triad, you will be dealing only with Triad, not the schools.
Students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches and others may qualify for a discount on their internet services through the Affordable Connectivity Program. See website for details: https://www.fcc.gov/acp
We hope that this high-speed internet option can be beneficial to some in our community.
