We are still hiring!!! We are looking for several 1:1 aide positions at Coronado as well as an additional 1st grade teacher. Our enrollment numbers are getting up there and I know it is a last minute effort, but we are also looking to hire an additional 1st grade teacher if we can. If we can find one, this would lower 1st grade class sizes from 24 to 18. If you know of anyone, please have them apply as soon as possible. Thank you!

SJUSD Community, We need your input! This Summer, our administration team and staff have been working on several ideas . We would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, questions, etc. on these ideas and any others you have to inform what we do as we prepare for the upcoming school year. For this reason, we are holding two community "Listening Sessions" next week and would love for you to come out and share. When: Wednesday, July 27th, from 4-6pm OR Thursday, July 28th, from 6-8pm Where: High School Library Why: To get community input! This is a casual, come-and-go-as-you-want event. You do not need to be there the entire time. We would love to just have you come in, share ideas, ask questions, or just listen to some of the things we are currently working on. See you next week!

As many of you know, school meals have been free the last couple of years due to the pandemic. This year, the government is having us go back to charging for meals. As a district, we will resume meal prices at the same rate as pre-pandemic. Here are those amounts. Breakfasts--$2.00 Lunch --Coronado: $2.45 --Middle School: $2.70 --High School: $2.95 Your child may qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on your income. An application for free or reduced-price meals can be picked up at any of our schools.

Our students did amazing this year on their state tests! As you can see from the table, each of our grades scored above (often, well above) state averages for both English Language Arts and math. We are blessed to have great teachers, principals, aides, and other staff members who work tirelessly to help students succeed. Well done students and staff!

Some have asked us about our eligibility requirements for extracurricular activities in the district. Here they are. Our plan for the given year will be to continue to allow students to participate in extracurricular activities that SJUSD offers as long as the student maintains their full-time status as a student in our district. Homeschoolers are protected by statute and so also may participate in such activities. When a student falls below full-time status in SJUSD in order to attend another school (not homeschool), they would no longer be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities (band, orchestra, choir, sports, etc.) at SJUSD, as they would at that point be attending a different school. There would be no “pay to play” option, similar to how a student attending one public school in person would not be able to pay to play at another neighboring school. We are encouraging all homeschool families to verify their homeschool status by filling out the paperwork at the Apache County Superintendent's Office. Thank you!!

School year 2021-2022 was a busy one in the district! As we look back on the many accomplishments of this year, we are so proud of our students, teachers, administrators, staff, and so many others who made this an amazing year! Here are just a few of the highlights. (for more highlights, check out the following link to our website: https://www.sjusd.net/article/762374) At the District Level --At a time when other districts are struggling with learning loss due to Covid, every one of our grade levels scored above (often well above) the state averages on State testing. As an example, 86% of our 3rd graders scored proficient or highly proficient on the math portion of the state (AASA) test, while the average around the state was only 39%. -Broke away from the County consortium and established our own consortium (Arizona Rural Schools Consortium), providing a savings of around $70,000 -Completed a full renovation of the middle school cafeteria, foyer, bathrooms, and gymnasium --New batting cages were installed at the middle school thanks to the following people: PERKINS CINDERS: donated aggregate, the cement and labor DW DUSK: donated labor for cement and finish work TEP, SRP and TRISTATE: donated the poles EW PARKER: set the poles Other various contractors donated money for the pitching machines, nets and hardware. Kasey Nelson hung the lines and nets and organized and orchestrated the project (thank you!!) -Named football stadium, Mike Morgan Stadium -Created a district-wide writing program, with a paper and digital format -Installed new playground at the middle school -Pursued and received the Final Mile Project grant, allowing for high-speed internet in St. Johns -Created a new app for the district that will help parents, teachers, and community members keep up-to-date on all things SJUSD -Updated our district website -Transitioned to a new point of sale software that will make it easier to track money in the district -Revised our professional leave policy -Installed district-wide security system -Created and offered ACT prep class at the high school, along with life-prep class focused on helping students apply to college, fill out FAFSA forms, learn basic financial literacy skills, etc. -Utilized grant money to purchase new computers for teachers (to be purchased in batches over the next few years)

I just wanted to give a huge shout-out to all of our teachers and our 3rd grade students!!! 52% of our 3rd graders scored proficient or highly proficient on the AASA ELA state testing and 86% scored proficient or highly proficient on the AASA Math state test. The state average for ELA was only 41% and for math was 39%!!! Way to go kids! You should be very proud of yourselves!!!

Dear SJUSD Community, Like you, we are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas on Tuesday. We share in the heartbreak we are all feeling for the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence. School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. As an added precaution, we have charged each of our school’s administration teams to increase security and awareness in their buildings this week. This Summer we also plan to revisit our school safety plan and make needed adjustments. We will do all we can to make our schools as safe as possible. Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time. Sincerely, Kyle Patterson Superintendent SJUSD
